Minnesota experiences very diverse and distinct seasons. Regardless of the season, however, residents take advantage of the many indoor and outdoor activities that each provides. Many who have never visited or resided in Minnesota envision never-ending bitter winters. This is far from reality.

Four Seasons

One of the things that people in Minnesota cherish is the fact that we have four distinct seasons unlike many areas of the United States. Winter starts in December and Spring starts in mid March, Summer in June, and the beautiful Fall in September. Occasionally, we receive a fifth season in winter, when for some unknown reason winter takes a vacation and warm sunny days stay here for a week or two. The average year round temperature is 56°F.

Throughout spring, summer, and fall, residents are outside much of the time engaging in various recreational and leisurely activities. Each season usually brings a week of rainy weather but usually the seasons are marked by sunny, clear skies. Many escape to northern Minnesota where the temperature is cooler and the great Minnesota outdoors await. With all the lakes in Minnesota, it's very common to spend the weekend on the water.

Fall is one of the areas favorite seasons with the leaves and foliage changing colors. It's a great time to take a tour of the countryside and go for weekend drives.

Winter Outdoors

The famous Minnesota winters are tales of legend. And, like all legends, has some truth and a lot of exaggeration. Since Rochester lies in the southeastern tip of Minnesota, our winters are much different than those found further north. Many residents will say that winters as of late have been especially mild - even to the extent that winter outdoor enthusiasts have been somewhat hampered.

The snow usually comes in December and usually lifts people's spirits since it means one can go skiing, kids can play outdoors in the snow, and the holiday season is near. Usually every winter, Rochester receives two or three big snowfalls that provide a serene blanket of white across the city, further enhancing the quiet stillness of winter.
