As is often the case, Rochester offers the best of large and small cities by offering the name brands and variety of goods available in larger cities and at the same time the convenience and service of a small city. You won't have to go far and plan your entire day to go grocery shopping.

Downtown Shopping

Rochester has many large shopping areas in all parts of the city. Downtown hosts a variety of shops and cafes that during the weekday are constantly filled. Many downtown workers fill Barnes and Noble at noon or take a break in a city park for lunch and stop by a small store before heading back to work.

Southside Shopping

In the southwest corner of town, two large malls dominate the area. The first is Apache Mall and is one of the most visited shopping centers in southeast Minnesota. Shoppers can often find the latest brands of clothing, cosmetics and more, taking in the whole day at the more than 80 stores inside the indoor mall and food court.

Nearby are two smaller shopping centers with each offering something unique. Barclay Square is host to many discount stores. To the east is Crossroads Shopping center offering everything from office supplies, luxury furniture, pet food, and outdoor gear. Truly, there is something for everyone.

The newest shopping area in southern Rochester is the Broadway Commons area on Hwy 63 South. A Walmart Superstore is located here as well as department stores like Kohl's, Old Navy, and Bed Bath and Beyond as well as banking facilities and restaurants. Nearby is Menards - one of the most popular and largest home improvement stores in the Midwest.

Northside Shopping

The northern end of Rochester isn't forgotten and has numerous department and discount stores. At Hwy 52 and 37th Street is a large shopping area home to Best Buy, Super Target, Ashley Furniture and much more. Two home improvement stores are also located in this area as well as WalMart and Sam's Club.

This area is home to "car row" with most of the city's car dealers located on this stretch of Hwy 52. With so much of the city's growth located in northwest Rochester, it's no surprise how much retail development has taken place as well. IBM employees who work in this section of the city are able to visit the many restaurants that are located only a short drive in any direction.

In northeast Rochester, a smaller number but equally interesting shops opened due to the rise in population in this section of Rochester. Probably the most popular attraction is Chateau Theatres. With 16 screens, a food court and special events, its no surprise that this is one of the most successful movie theatres in the United States.
